Sokratis Sofianopoulos graduated from the Department of Computer Science of the University of Ioannina in 2002, and holds a MSc in Distributed & Multimedia Information Systems from the Dept. of Computer Science of Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh (2003). He received his PhD degree from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in 2010, on research he conducted on Language Modeling for Machine Translation Systems and multi-objective optimization using evolutionary algorithms. Since 2005, he is a research associate at the Institute for Language and Speech Processing (ILSP) of Athena Research Center (Athena RC). He has actively participated in multiple research projects focusing on Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, and Machine Translation, while also teaching graduate and undergraduate courses on on machine learning, artificial intelligence and object-oriented programming. He has co-authored numerous journal and conference publications and has also served as a reviewer in conferences such as LREC, EAMT and COLING. His research interests are language modelling, machine translation, deep learning and evolutionary computation. He is also a key contributor to the development of Greek LLMs, Meltemi and Krikri and Co-Founder and CEO at layer42labs a spin off company of Athena.
